Many ancient authors considered Pyrrhus of Epirus to be the best general of his time. He had major military talents, won a number of battles, was admired by the likes of Hannibal, and rose up from outcast to king. Yet, Pyrrhus is often overlooked, remaining in the shadow of his more renowned second cousin, Alexander the Great. He is mainly remembered for a number of incredibly costly "Pyrrhic victories", but his legacy extends beyond this unflattering saying.
