Because ancient warfare was not limited to land-based combat, many civilisations wanted to have access to a seafaring vessel that could transport troops and even engage in naval combat. For the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and others, the trireme proved to be an effective ship for waging war on the waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
