In the early 13^th century AD, the Languedoc region of southern France became the stage for one of the most brutal and controversial military campaigns of the Middle Ages. During the Albigensian Crusade, as it would come to be known, the French Crown, the Papal States, and many Crusaders fought to eradicate Catharism, which had been branded a dangerous heresy.
