135 - Once more into the desert
The French campaign in Egypt had started with great success, but once the Siege of Acre ended in defeat, Napoleon decided he had had enough and left for France in August of 1799 to seize power. General Kleber, left in command, negotiated an honourable withdrawal with the local Anglo-Ottoman commanders, but the English government did not sign, and the Ottomans launched a new offensive. The latter was defeated, and Kleber assassinated in June 1800. Once the English landed more troops at Alexandria, the writing was on the wall...
