Welcome to Ancient History Magazine!
Welcome to the all-new website for Ancient History Magazine! A while back ago, we asked you to fill in a survey and the response has been overwhelming: most of you do indeed believe that there is a void in the marketplace as far as an accessible and beautiful magazine about the ancient world is concerned.
Right now, we are gearing up to launch a Kickstarter campaign. The current plan is to start the campaign on the 18th of March, right around the time that the latest issue of Ancient Warfare has returned from the printer’s and should be on its way to subscribers and shops around the world. We will post an update once the Kickstarter campaign has launched.
In case you don’t quite know what Kickstarter is, you may want to read the blog post I posted a while ago on the Ancient Warfare editor’s blog.
But who precisely is this ‘we’ that I have referred to a few times now? Since Ancient History Magazine will have a broad scope, we decided that it would be a good idea to have a larger editorial team helm the magazine as well. The people involved are probably familiar to you. They include Jona Lendering (ancient historian par excellence and webmaster of Livius.Org), Jasper Oorthuys (managing director at Karwansaray Publishers and founder of Ancient Warfare magazine), and myself (editor of Ancient Warfare since 2012).
In truth, we’ve been cooperating behind the scenes on Ancient Warfare magazine and other projects as well. We make frequent use of Jona’s photos and expertise for Ancient Warfare, for example, and I frequently pick Jasper’s brain when it comes to Roman topics in particular.
If the Kickstarter is a success, the three of us will work together with contributors from around the world, both familiar and fresh, to create a single solid issue of Ancient History Magazine. Publishing a second issue is one of our stretch goals in the coming campaign, and if interest in this new magazine is especially high we hope to launch it as a going concern.
No promises yet, though. For now, we are focused hard on setting up that Kickstarter campaign!
In order to whet your appetite, we are also now putting the finishing touches on a sample issue of Ancient History Magazine that will be made available as a free download for you to read and share with others, so you can get an idea of what we are striving for and give us some feedback.
In the meantime, you can check back here on the website where Jona, Jasper, and I will post new blog articles on a regular basis.
