Ancient Warfare Answers episode (151): Addressing the troops
How did leaders address their troops when making speeches? In movies their often riding back and forth in front of the the first line but only few of the troops would be able to hear the speech and then only fragments of it. When did they do it? Just before the actual battle? Before leaving camp and lining up in battle formation (which I guess took some time)? When playing role-playing games we have often chosen a version where the leader addresses the mid-level of troops, e g centurions and up. These then speak with their troops. Is this a reasonable version? Murray addresses this question by Patron Kristoffer "Illern" Holmén
