A year in review... and looking to 2025
2024 saw an exciting lineup of Medieval World: Culture & Conflict, with 6 issues ranging in themes from Benedictine monasticism and medieval celebrations, to the history and culture of Bohemia, Spain, and the medieval Baltic. The last issue focused on the cathedral of Notre-Dame, coordinated to complement the reopening of the building after the devastating 2019 fire.
This year's issues of the magazine include:
- MWCC.10 - Followers of Benedict: Religion, Ritual, and Reform
- MWCC.11 - Charles IV of Bohemia: Power, Patronage, Piety, and Identity
- MWCC.12 - Festivals and Revels: Celebrating in the Medieval World
- MWCC.13 - A New Spanish Empire: Warfare, Religion, and Exploration
- MWCC.14 - The Medieval Baltic: Trade, Warfare, and Diplomacy
- MWCC.15 - Notre-Dame de Paris: The History of a Gothic Masterpiece
I have enjoyed working on all the issues, but perhaps my favorite has been MWCC.11 on Charles IV of Bohemia. He is a historical figure who fostered at his court cultural, diplomatic, and artistic contacts between Byzantium, the Slavic world, and the western medieval sphere, promoting the creation of art and architecture that reflected these cultural contacts and negotiations.
As we look ahead to 2025, you can expect to see special issues on education and learning in the Middle Ages, the history of the horse in medieval life, apocalypses, and courtly life, among other exciting themes. Special columns in the magazine will focus on chivalry, medieval 'bestsellers', and daily life! Be sure to continue to check out the book reviews, which highlight new titles on medieval topics. You can always check back for updates to the lineup on our “ Editorial Plan ” page. And do not hesitate to be in touch with proposals for any of these themes, or suggestions for the special columns. We are eager to hear from our readers and authors!
We hope you have enjoyed reading Medieval World: Culture & Conflict this past year, and you will continue to do so in 2025. Don't miss any of the upcoming issues! Subscription details for print and digital versions of the magazine are available on our website.
Happy New Year to all!
