Themes for volume XI
The votes are in! Several hundred of you voted for what you would like to see as themes for Ancient Warfare volume XI. In addition, I have also picked themes for the first two issues of volume XII, which means that Ancient Warfare is set until well into the year 2018. Here’s an overview of the themes for issues XI.1 (which we already picked last year) through to XII.2:
-
Issue XI.1: Archery in the ancient world
-
Issue XI.2: Warfare among the Greeks in Southern Italy
-
Issue XI.3: Crossing the Rubicon: Caesar’s Civil War (49–45 BC)
-
Issue XI.4: Ancient Israel at war
-
Issue XI.5: At the edge of the world: the Graeco-Bactrian kingdom
-
Issue XI.6: Queen Zenobia of Palmyra versus Rome
-
Issue XII.1: The Decelean War
-
Issue XII.2: The Thracians
The theme for issue XII.1 is a sequel to issue X.1. The latter dealt with the Archidamian War, or the first part of the Peloponnesian War, the epic struggle between Sparta and Athens and their respective allies. Issue XII.1 will pick up the story with the second half of that conflict, in which Sparta eventually emerged exhausted but victorious.
The Thracians proved to be very popular among voters and I have therefore decided that they will be the theme for issue XII.2. The themes for issues XII.3 through XII.6 will be chosen at a later date. The editorial plan has been updated, so if you want to submit a proposal for any of the above issues of Ancient Warfare, please check that page as regards proposal deadlines. (And remember, you’re always free to send me a proposal for a non-theme-related article.)
Next year, we’ll also do another paper special issue, similar to the specials we did on the Varian Disaster (2009), the Roman centuria (2010), and the Battle of Marathon (2011). I’m keeping the theme for this one under wraps for now (especially as we have yet to reveal our hardcover special for this year!), but I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised.
