Issue 68 - Replaying the Battle of Leipzig
In issue 68 of Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy, Roger Murrow wrote an introduction to our theme on ‘The Battle of the Nations’. Besides covering some of the history of this conflict, he described how he and his friends had set out to recreate the engagement - sort of.
Why sort of? Since the main Battle of Leipzig was fought between hundreds of thousands of men, recreating it in miniature (even when some allowances are made) is no small feat. Roger and his friends opted for a game with a Leipzig ‘flavour,’ rather than a 100% accurate recreation of the battle. Nonetheless, they managed a game with around a thousand figures a side! Unfortunately, space in issue 68 prevented us from going into detail about their replay. Therefore, we’re offering an extended look at their game via a free PDF. Included is a summary of their game, some ideas if you are planning something like this yourself, and a full Order of Battle for both the French and allied forces.
