Statistically, the ‘Sicilian defense’ is a very successful opening for Black in chess. Unfortunately for the Bourbon Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Giuseppe Garibaldi proved in 1860 that statistics only indicate a probability. His bold invasion of Sicily with some 1000 motivated volunteers met a confused and lethargic defense that gave him his first victory on the way to Italian unification.
